Sciatica can be an extremely painful condition. It is the result of compression or irritation of the largest nerve in the body. This nerve is located in the lower back and branches down through each leg. There are five nerve roots that attach this nerve to the spine. If any of these roots become constricted or aggravated in any way, the end result is sciatica. This condition often presents as a sharp or stabbing pain that is located in the lower back and may travels down into one leg, sometimes as far as the toes.
When one has sciatica, it is most painful when sitting or standing. The pain is often constant, however, no matter what one is doing. The symptoms that go along with sciatica can be:
- Weakness in one foot or leg
- Pain in the buttock and leg affecting one side
- Pain in the back of one leg
- Pain that goes from the lower back all the way to the foot on one side
- Pain that worsens upon standing in one place or sitting
Some cases of sciatica are so severe that they can result in the entire leg being numb, affect a person’s bowel control, and lead to incontinence.

Where to Go for Sciatica Relief
It may sound odd, but the irritation of the sciatic nerve may begin with a misalignment in the upper neck. When the body compensates for a misalignment in the upper neck, the entire spine is thrown off balance. Even if the atlas (the top vertebra) is misaligned by ¼ of a millimeter, it can wreak havoc on the entire body.
As an upper cervical chiropractor, I focus on the atlas bone using a gentle technique to align it. Once this problem is corrected, the body can heal soft tissue damage and may relieve nerve compression. Often those who have been suffering from sciatica see an end to it as the body regains proper alignment.
