One may wonder where the name Meniere’s disease came from? This condition is named after a French doctor who proposed that the symptoms of this condition came from the inner ear rather than the brain – the current belief in 1861. The symptoms he was referring to are:
- Vertigo – a spinning sensation
- Loss of hearing in the affected ear
- Tinnitus – ringing in the ear
Since then, numerous other theories have been suggested attempting to find a cause and solution for these symptoms. Some of these theories are:
- An autoimmune reaction
- Problems with circulation
- A viral infection
- Allergies
- A genetic connection
However, no definite answers have been agreed upon. It is generally accepted that endolymph – fluid in the inner ear – builds up leading to Meniere’s. Due to the lack of understanding of this condition, most doctors will focus on caring for individual symptoms in order to give their patients some relief.

Why Does Fluid Build Up in the Inner Ear Leading to Meniere’s?
One reason that endolymph builds up may have to do with a misalignment in the upper neck vertebrae. The atlas (C1) and axis (C2) have the responsibility of protecting the brainstem. Therefore, if they happen to move out of alignment due to a car accident, normal wear and tear, a sports accident, or simply a trip and fall undue pressure can by placed on the brainstem hindering its function. If the brainstem is not working at its optimum, signals from the inner ear can become distorted. Also, a misalignment can affect Eustachian tube function and lead to excess fluid.
