While these two regions seem far apart, they are intricately connected. First, let’s take a look at some health conditions that may cause lower back pain and then we will discuss how to find relief.

Lower Back Pain and Related Problems

The following are some of the most common reasons for lower back pain, although many others exist.

  • Herniated disc: Discs are spongy substances that keep the vertebrae from rubbing against each other. If one of these discs push out through a crack, the end result is pain and numbness at the location of the disc.
  • Spinal arthritis: This occurs over an extended period of time and is often caused by a minor injury. When the spine continues in a misaligned state, the discs can degenerate and lead to pain.
  • Sciatica: The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and originates in the lower back, branching down into each leg. If it becomes pinched or irritated, pain may occur in the lower back, legs, or buttocks and is usually felt on one side only.

Alleviating Back Pain by Caring for the Upper Cervical Spine

At our Spring Lake Park, Minnesota office, we have seen been able to help our patients successfully cope with lower back pain. As mentioned earlier, the problem often begins at the top of the spine. The head can weigh as much as 14 pounds and, if the neck becomes misaligned, this weight is distributed unevenly along the spinal column. The lower back receives most of the damage as the spine shifts to keep the head level with the horizon line.

Therefore, getting the bones of the upper neck back into place relieves the lower back of stress and pressure. This is done using a gentle technique rather than forcing or popping the bones into place. The body can then begin to heal naturally, and back pain may become a thing of the past.
