Most have heard of sciatica and may know about the sciatic nerve, but not everyone knows that it runs below the piriformis muscle. If the piriformis muscle becomes tight, it is referred to as piriformis syndrome and can be to blame for the pain of sciatica. It is known for:

  • Tingling, aching, pain, and/or numbness going down the back of the thigh, calf, and possibly into the foot
  • Pain that gets worse when one sits on hard surfaces like a car seat, a toilet seat, or a bike seat
  • Consistent pain, numbness, aching, or tingling in the buttocks

Visiting a family physician for sciatica pain may result in:

  • NSAIDs
  • Rehabilitation
  • A corticosteroid injection

However, the underlying cause of the sciatic pain must be addressed for it to go away and not return as no medication will be able to do this. Fortunately, there is a natural, effective, and safe way to confront the pain of sciatica.

Sciatica and the Neck

It may seem strange that sciatica can be related to a problem within the neck, but it’s true. The spinal cord is responsible for sending signals to and from the brain and body while the spine acts as its protector. If the top bone of the spine – the atlas – becomes misaligned, tension is placed on the brainstem. This leads to distorted signals being sent via the brainstem causing improper posture, balance issues, muscle spasms, and pain. If muscles become imbalanced and then tense on one side of the body, one hip may become higher than the other, making one leg shorter than the other and irritating the sciatic nerve.

Here at Hejny Chiropractic in Spring Lake Park, Minnesota, we use a method that is gentle and precise to help the atlas reposition naturally. We never force or pop the spine. Once this bone is realigned, communication is restored, and irritation to the sciatic nerve calms down. This often leads to relief for sciatica patients.
