In fact, it was recently reported by The News-Press that approximately 20% of chronic headache conditions are cervicogenic. That means the headaches spring from a disorder of the neck. How do neck problems cause headaches, and what makes posture so important?

Both at work and at home, we subject ourselves to positions that can cause neck problems. For example, you may work in an office and sit at a desk all day. If your chair, desk, keyboard, and monitor are not all positioned precisely, it can lead to poor posture. Plus, most of us do not remember to take breaks from looking at the screen as often as we should. Then we do the same thing on our day off, perhaps binge watching our favorite show to catch up. The tablet sits in a person’s lap, and he cranes his neck to look down at it. It’s clear why so many headaches are neck related.

Help the Neck—Help the Headaches

Here are two things you can do to help your neck and thus any headaches that result from neck problems. The first is to use proper posture at all times both at work and at home. If you are using a mobile device for a long period of time, try to prop it up on a stand so you won’t have to lean your head as far forward. At work, try to use a chair that allows your feet to touch the ground. You may need to get a footstool. If your monitor can be raised to eye level, do so. Don’t forget to take a break every 45 minutes or so.

Second, come in and see us at Hejny Chiropractic. We use the Atlas Orthogonal method of upper cervical chiropractic to detect and correct upper cervical misalignments. If your headaches are caused by such a misalignment, the correction can be of great benefit.
