Meniere’s disease is a disorder that affects the inner ear. The inner ear serves two roles; it plays an important part in hearing as well as your sense of balance. When a person is suffering from Meniere’s disease, these two functions can be dramatically compromised. Meniere’s is characterized by episodes of vertigo, which can be very severe, hearing loss, and a ringing sound in the affected ear.
Perhaps the most frustrating feature is that the cause still remains a mystery. However, recent research published should give hope to Meniere’s sufferers who are tired of merely managing their symptoms.
Your Neck and Meniere’s Disease
Because of the close proximity of the inner ear to the vertebra in the neck, it is important to address any misalignments that may have occurred as a result of some type of past injury. Even the most “mild” of motor vehicle accidents can cause a whiplash injury to the neck and misalignment to the upper cervical spine, which consists of the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) vertebrae.

One of the most surprising facts is that among the 300 Meniere’s sufferers in this particular study, it took an average of 15 years for symptoms to arise after their accident.
The good news is that the results of this recent study are quite promising for Meniere’s sufferers undergoing upper cervical chiropractic care. Of the 300 people in the study, all of them were found to have an upper cervical specific misalignment. Following a period of care, 97% reported a dramatic improvement in their vertigo, which can be the most debilitating factor of Meniere’s disease.
