Sometimes, they are just unavoidable. However, there are things that can be done to help prevent some common injuries. Often these deal with simply changing some habits. Let’s take a look at a few of these and how implementing them can help prevent accidents at work.

Jobs That Require Sitting for Long Periods

These are often called desk jobs and require a person to answer phones or use the computer most of his or her day. Receptionists, computer support staff, technical support, and call center jobs fall under this category. What can be done to make this type of job safer?

  • Use a pair of headphones.
  • Use an ergonomic keyboard and a comfortable chair with back support.
  • Be sure to stretch and walk about once every hour.
  • Focus your eyes on something other than the computer screen every 45 minutes.

Jobs That Require Driving

These types of jobs may include delivery jobs, transporting people from one place to another, or driving cross-country in a semi-truck. This is another job that requires sitting for long periods. Here are some safety tips:

  • Use proper back support while driving.
  • Always wear your seat belt.
  • Use Bluetooth or headphones while talking on the phone.
  • Always use your mirrors and be sure they are adjusted before heading out on the road.
  • Correctly adjust your seat.

Jobs That Require Lifting

These jobs require moving heavy objects, twisting and using the body for long periods of time, and various outdoor work. Important things to remember:

  • When lifting, always use your legs, not your back. Squat low, relax your back, and let your legs do the work.
  • Be sure to wear a brace or use some type of back support.
