Sciatica is known for pain that spreads along the sciatic nerve from the lower back to the buttocks and then down the back of one of the legs. It generally is felt from the buttock to the back of the thigh or calf. Usually, only one leg is affected.
The pain can be dull and achy, extremely sharp and stabbing, or anywhere in between. It can sometimes feel like an electric jolt or shock. It worsens when a person coughs or sneezes. Sitting for long periods can aggravate the condition. Some people also have numbness, tingling, or even muscle weakness in the leg or foot. One part of the leg may be numb, while pain may be present somewhere else.

It may sound strange, but often the underlying source of sciatica is in the upper area of the neck. If a misalignment is present in either the C1 or C2 vertebra, it can lead to problems throughout the entire spine. The spine is comprised of muscles, joints, and ligaments that all work in conjunction with one another.
