While the fact is that most migraines are accompanied by a severe headache, that is just one symptom of the neurological condition. In fact, migraines can occur without a headache in some cases (called a silent migraine), and this can easily lead to a misdiagnosis.

What Are the Symptoms of a Silent Migraine?

While the pain may not be there, these other symptoms still make silent migraines debilitating.

  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Thirst
  • Chills
  • Frequent urination
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Mental symptoms (confusion, euphoria, or irritability)
  • Aura (which precedes the migraine and may involve vision and speech problems)

Neurovascular Origins

One thing that researchers know about head pain, including silent migraines, is that they originate in both the nervous and vascular systems. The brainstem and proper blood flow, in particular, have been identified as important factors in migraines.

The Effect of an Upper Cervical Misalignment

When the C1 vertebrae (atlas) is out of alignment, it can result in both neurological and vascular changes. For example, since the C1 acts a protection for the brainstem a misalignment may place pressure on this vital control system of the body. Plus, misalignments can alter fluid flow between the brain and body, including blood. All of this creates the perfect environment for migraines to occur.

At Hejny Chiropractic, we use the Atlas Orthogonal technique of upper cervical chiropractic to move the C1 into proper position. This can give the body the chance it needs to heal from the damage caused by the misalignment. If migraines were the result of a subluxation, they may be reduced in frequency or severity, and even resolve completely.

If you experience migraines, whether they involve headaches or not, and have a history of head or neck trauma, you are a prime candidate to receive benefits from upper cervical care.
